In my pandemic binge TV watching I find myself obsessed with the Netflix series “Instant Hotel”. Instant Hotel pits temporary vacation rental proprietors i.e. AirBnB or Uber rentals owner against each other to see who has the best vacation rental properties.
The properties are judged by an expert and the other contestants on location, activities in the area, good night sleep and value for money.
The best part of the show, and I think the attraction to me as I have barely left the house in the past year, is seeing all the different beautiful areas of Australia.
From tropical regions to the Great Barrier Reef to the outback to wine country, each episode shows off fantastic locations in Australia.
There are only two seasons available and it comes off as a work in progress with the short season two exchanging a host, changing around the scoring, dropping the couple number by one, changing the prize from a trip to the US to $100K cash and amping up the reality show antics.
Overall as a competition show it’s very awkward as the various Instant Hotel vacation rental properties are very hard to judge especially if the location doesn’t typically host six to eight strangers at a time.
But the fun is in seeing how the various places are set up, the decor and the activities in the area. In the first season the couples had to choose between two activities as well as figure out dinner – either at a local dive pub with Mad Max type characters or put a shrimp on the barbie.
In season two the activities seem pre-planned for the group and the fridge is stocked with food. I’m not sure about the timing of season two but perhaps Covid forced these decisions as well as the shortened season.
