Working with a woodstove or even a firepit is fraught with danger from burns. Take precaution to protect your skin and clothing!
We had a woodstove installed this year and one thing I learned is a regular old leather glove isn’t good enough. I had some 14 or 16 inch gloves. I’ll open the door with my ungloved left hand and place wood inside or move the bypass lever with my leather gloves right hand.
But still I end up with burns on my arms just below the elbow. You really need to have longer gloves when working with woodburning appliances.
Leather gloves made for welding or even electrical work are great – you can pick up red hot embers that fall out of the front of the woodstove, place logs in and control the damper. But that exposed skin on your upper arm or elbow is bound to come in contact with the hot stove at some point.
Do yourself a favor and get a pair of these extra long leather gloves for working with your wood stove or fire pit. Your skin and your clothing will thank you!
