The sand dunes of the National Seashore at the tip of Cape Cod provide a sense of mystery, exploration, and throwback to a time when artists sought isolation and natural beauty as their inspiration.
With little needs other than paint supplies, a loaf of crusty bread, a hunk of cheese, some jars of preserves and a few groceries in the mouse-proof cooler, these vagabonds spend the summer nestled down away from the coastal, sandy winds in shacks hobbled together with driftwood scraps, in a quasi-legal arrangement not unlike squatters rights.
“The Dune Shacks of Peaked Hill Bars Historic District is a 1900-acre National Register district significant for its association with the historical development of art and literature in America; for its representation of a rare, fragile property type; and for its association with the poet Harry Kemp.
It has long been a place of inspiration, contemplation, creativity, and solitude.
Since the mid-1990s, the National Park Service has had agreements with non-profit organizations that offer artist-in-residence and writer-in-residence programs in the historic dune shacks.”
