Autumn in New England

Currently here in New England we are experiencing a wet weather pattern.  Afternoon thunderstorms, daily showers and gray skies.  I wish I could send some of this water out west where the fires are burning.

I’m looking forward to a hopefully drier period in a month or so when this jungle like green vegetation turns to amazing reds, oranges and yellows in fall and foggy mornings setup some amazing photographic opportunities.

I think snow covered landscapes and Autumn are my two favorite times to photograph in New England.  The rest of the time it’s either what we call stick season – leafless trees or just a blanket of green which can be a bit boring.  Early spring is another time that is interesting as the fresh new leaves are so brilliant.

The tricky part of photographing the fall leaves in New England is timing.  The pressure to hit “peak” foliage is palpable.   I seriously feel the stress of trying to figure out when and where the foliage is going to be the best.

And then there is the weather.  There always seems to be a tropical storm on the horizon that threatens to pull the leaves off the trees just around peak time.  If you wait too long, you might end up with getting something worse than if you got there too early.
