Do you have any fond memories of going to the beach as a child? Whether on vacation or as a summer spent in a beach house, I think most of us have a memory or two of summers at a beach somewhere.
My family had a small beach cottage in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. About a quarter mile from the beach, just far enough to be spared from the Hurricane of 1938. My grandfather built with from lumber cobbled together from times of war when lumber was rationed. He was only able to get enough to build a two car garage sized cottage and it was always packed to the rafters with relatives all sharing the single bathroom and outdoor shower.
Recently I was walking the beach in off season around Salisbury beach and I grabbed a slice of Sicilian pizza, you know that square, thick kind with only a thin layer of sweet tomato sauce, at the only open vendor on the pier and spotted this old car parked down by the water.
There was a pizza box on the back shelf and an old lady in the front passenger seat. I imagine the driver was her son, taking Mom down to the beach to relive some old memories of her youth when no doubt she danced the night away at the bandstand and perhaps kissed a boy under the pier.
I remember the day at the beach
I remember the hot sand burning my feet
I remember how cold the ocean felt
and how my skin seemed to sizzle in the heatI remember the boardwalk clamor
I remember how I wanted to eat everything in sight
I remember walking and baking in the hot sun
Even though now it’s still February and gloomyI remember savoring that summer day
But my favorite memory’s yet to come– Poem by Wade Blade
