I’ve been doing a lot of travel photography lately and I’ve been studying the advantages and disadvantages of various camera bags for air travel.
Air travel adds new considerations to a camera bag that you might not consider when photographing by car or simply walking around. A camera bag going through airports and on to airplanes are subjected to inspection by the TSA and get shoved under seats or into overhead bins. You also have to carry your bag along with other luggage from the car, Uber, taxi or shuttle bus to luggage check in.
I’ve been using a standard Canon backpack (#for many years and while I like how much gear it can handle, it’s low cost, nice interior zippered storage, adjustable dividers and it’s the ability to fit under an airplane seat, it has several disadvantages:
- The black interior makes it hard to see black camera gear
- The two velcro side pockets are useless. Too shallow for a water bottle and too insecure to trust to anything as one slides it under a plane seat.
- The two pockets in the front provide more storage but also more potential bulk.
- The straps in the front are great for shoving in a rain jacket but can get caught on things when sliding under an airplane seat.
- No strap for attaching to a luggage handle.
So my requires for my next bag include the following:
- Slim profile. Nothing to catch on when sliding under an airplane seat.
- Bright colored interior to find gear easily.
- Interior zippered storage areas for SD cards and batteries.
- Adjustable interior dividers (most camera bags have this feature)
- Room for my Chromebook
- Easy access to my cellphone and wallet (I put everything in the bag for the x-ray machine)
- Waterbottle holder on the outside.
I think I found my perfect and affordable camera bag in the Endurax Camera Backpack for $52.99. Here is why:

- Has a slim profile with hard shell protective front. No pockets for thieves to stick their hands in or for me to overload.
