“It’s a huge misconception that Cape Cod closes up for the winter season,” says Kristen Mitchell Hughes, vice president of tourism marketing at the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a perfect time to explore all our villages without the crowds and the temperatures are relatively mild.”
Lucky us, my brother has a rental beach house at Craigsville Beach in Centerville on Cape Cod. Booked solid most of the summer, off season is when we get to head down to the Cape for a break. Honestly, I really like the off season in beach communities. No crowds, less out of towners hurrying around, often lost or driving too fast. Easy to find parking. Easier to get a table at the restaurants that say open in the off season. Easy to set up atmospheric photographs for my book cover portfolio of rights managed images.
Keep in mind there is a reason for “off seasons” – because the weather is typically cold and damp. You can get lucky and get an early late or early warm spell but pack for the worst and expect it. Remember that on the shore windy conditions are likely.
According to one travel writer:
“The Cape is a summer resort destination and although the awesome beauty of the place can be appreciated under the most extreme conditions, it just wasn’t meant to be anything other than a summer destination.
Plenty of people live here off season because they love the place….but there’s a reason why the Cape is so much more crowded in the summer months: IT’S BETTER! “
But not everyone likes hot summer weather or even baking on the beach. Some enjoy the solitude of the natural environment, cooking their own meals back at the house and checking out some museums without the crowds. Here are some attractions worth seeking out in the off season:
Cape Cod winters can be fairly mild, with daily temperatures sometimes reaching as high as 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Precipitation is usually a wintery mixture of snow and rain. However, the Cape does get walloped with massive snowstorms occasionally – in these rare instances, you may wish to stick solely to the indoor activities offered in the region. Regardless of what you enjoy – brisk outdoor adventures or staying out of the cold – there are a number of fun excursions you can take with your family.
