I’m often asked, “How do you get these puppies to sit for you so nicely?”
Well, don’t judge the final result with the behind the scenes craziness. Photographing pets in a formal studio setting is a juggling act.
The photographer angles for the best, well angle and the dog angles for the quickest way out the door.
Freezing motion is best down with a studio strobe. The downside is that it tends to freak out some dogs.
Nailing focus on the eyes is another tricky feat. I find it easiest to use a mirrorless camera for a couple of reasons. One I can trigger the shutter by touching the back LCD screen so my eyes don’t leave the animal. And at the same time I can choose the focus point. Just tap the eye on the back on the camera.
Some pets can be taught to pose. Like my Westie Tiki. He is a great model. I just put him in place and he holds to pose for minutes. And then he gets a treat of course.
But with most dogs its trial and error and try, try again.
