Classic American Diners in the Upper Valley

A slice of pie and a cup of joe. The Upper Valley region in New Hampshire and Vermont along the Connecticut River has a great collection of classic old Americana diners.

Some are diners in spirit with comfort food, good prices and company. Others are in the classic historic diner, even if the outside has been expanded or the diner totally enclosed with a building.

The diner at the Quechee tourist complex that includes an antique market, distillery and other businesses has gone through a few owners and names over recent years. Currently, it’s called Public House Diner in Quechee Gorge Village.

Originally called “The Ross Diner” what is currently the Public House Diner (previously CJs and then Farmer’s Daughter) operated in Holyoke, Massachusetts from 1947 to April 28, 1990. It was purchased in 1991 and moved up to Quechee, Vermont where it has been serving diner food ever since under a few different owners.

It’s an authentic Worchester “Semi-Streamliner” #787 built in 1946 and one of only seven left in the world with one being in the Henry Ford Museum. But here is a historic classic museum piece that you can actually order breakfast.

Four Aces Diner, West Lebanon, New Hampshire

From the outside, this unassuming building just across the river from White River Junction, Vermont does not give away the treasure it holds inside.

Open the doors of the 4 Aces Diner and you step back in time to a moment in America when then local lunch counter served up hot meals to the local factory workers.

Like many small diners of the day, the 4 Aces Diner has expanded from its humble train car like origins.

A genuine Worcester Diner (#837), it originally was located downtown, but after a fire was relocated to its current location at 23 Bridge St .
