Nightmare Alley, Guillermo del Toro’s remake of the original 1947 film noir is an Oscar contender. Great movie available now to subscribers to HBO Max. You can watch the original for free on YouTube and compare the two versions. You’ll find the new movie improves on the original by adding more backstory to the main character and the ending is more in line with the original book, not hampered by The Motion Picture Production Code which was a set of industry guidelines for self-censorship of content that was applied to most motion pictures released by major studios in the United States from 1934 to 1968. In the original movie, they added a bit of an uplifting ending.
