The Great Island Trail
The Great Island Trail in the Cape Cod town of Wellfleet is part of the National Seashore and this trail follows sandy stretches between the elevated heights of Great Island and Great Beach Hill which features a slowly returning forest from the days when most of the trees on Cape Cod were cut down for various industries from ship and house building to glass making.
If you want to follow the trail all the way, plan on three hours or just do as much as you like. The trail is not well marked. If there were any signage, it’s mostly missing. You can start out down the trail and then make a right over the dune (Dune Cut Through Trail) and then follow the beach for miles or continue straight to the forest and the site of an old tavern from back in the day. The tavern is long gone but it’s fun to image in local fishermen hanging out with a few grogs and enjoying stories.

It is a long hike so be prepared or just take in a shorter section.
