Kodachrome

“We’re all so frightened by time, the way it moves on and the way things disappear. That’s why we’re photographers. We’re preservationists by nature. We take pictures to stop time, to commit moments to eternity. Human nature made tangible.” – Ben

Netflix has released a new drama based on the end of Kodak’s Kodachrome film, the celebrated slide film which film based photography purists have valued for its’ abilities to capture rich color.

Based on the article 2010 article about the last lab in the world to process Kodachrome film:

For Kodachrome Fans, Road Ends at Photo Lab in Kansas

The film Kodachrome followings famous National Geographic type photographer, Ben, who is dying from cancer, travels to reach the lab in time to develop four rolls of film from early in his career.

Ben has lead a life which left everyone in his past damaged from his ex-wife, to his brother and own son.  A self proclaimed bastard, Ben tries to make some kind of peace with his past just can’t seem to do it.

His estranged son and nurse accompany him on the trip and along the road Ben’s relationships with those he has hurt is explored seeking some kind of redeeming qualities.  The artist’s work is appreciated, the man not so much.

Ben has some great quotes about art and photography in the film and Leica camera fans will enjoy seeing the vintage camera cleaned and used through out the film.

“People are taking more pictures now than ever before, billions of them, but there are no slides, no prints. Just data. Electronic dust. Years from now when they dig us up there won’t be any pictures to find, no record of who we were or how we lived.” – Ben

Kodachrome stars Ed Harris, Jason Sudeikis and Elizabeth Olsen
