My Secret Door Project

So we have this extra space in our house. It’s on the lower level which is basically a walk out finished basement with two bedrooms, a full bathroom, living space and utility room PLUS this extra room that was semi wired and plumbed for another half bath.

Seems kind of ridiculous to have another bathroom on this floor so we’ve been using it as a storage room. Our home theater room is on the other side of it.

Originally it had two doors going into the space, I suppose one door was the future half bath and the other one would have gone into a closet. This living space already has five interior doors, a staircase and a slider to the backyard deck. So I drywalled over one of the doors to simplify the wall behind the TV.

Recently I’ve been using about half of the space in this room for three vintage pinball machines I restored plus some storage. Eventually I’d love to dedicate the entire room to five pinball machines but that probably won’t ever happen – but one can dream.

Anyway to create a bit more space in this room I decided to reverse the way the door opens — instead of into the room, I made it open out.

The only problem is now the hinge shows. So my solution was to purchase these “secret door” hinges.

Originally I purchase a secret door hinge from Amazon for $35 for two but it came with no template and no instructions. It was very daunting!

So I sent those back and discovered this amazing kit of secret door hinges for only $10 for a set of two. What makes these hinges amazing was that they came with instructions and tools – a router bit, screw driver bit, self centering hinge drill bit, allen wrenches, a small chisel and even a pencil!

My plan is to eventually clad that wall with a verticle slat acoustic wall which will hide the door even more. And I am installing this magnetic push openers so if one knows the room exists, you just have to push the door in and it will pop out like a cabinet door.
