Believe it or not, one can find the remains of a castle in the woods of New Hampshire. In Chesterfield, NH the Madame Sherri Forest reveals the stone staircase of a former French Chateau home of a Broadway costume designer.
New Hampshire actually has several castles built among the trees. lakes and mountains. Including Castle in the Clouds in Moultonborough, NH – a Mountaintop estate with a 1913 mansion on 5,500 acres with lake views, hiking & a restaurant.
Then there is Sunridge Castle (Hunt Castle) in Rindge, NH available for rental. And The Searles Castle is located in Windham, New Hampshire, in the United States.
Madame Sherri Castle – Only The Best
Madame Antoinette Sherri, a costume designer from New York, began buying land in the small village of Chesterfield, New Hampshire, in the late 1920s; she planned to build an extravagant summer home on the property. Her mantra, purportedly, was “Only the best”, and for years she threw wildly lavish parties at her castle, hosting an eclectic band of friends from the city. Until her money ran out, that is. Madame Sherri eventually moved on, leaving the chateau to fall into disrepair
Madame Sherri fell on hard times and died in poverty in 1965, as a ward of the state. The dramatic staircase ending mid-air is all that remains of the castle today. After falling prey to vandals, the castle was destroyed by a fire in 1962, leaving behind only the foundations and a section of the staircase.
Recently another section of the stair case fell so it is only a matter of time before the entire stucture is taken down.
