I spent the morning exploring the expansive Tonto National Forest just outside of Phoenix, Arizona.
I hiked up a few peaks, came across some interesting lakes, rivers and cliffs and even was surprise by some wild horses.
After coming out of the forest right into a new development in Mesa, I grabbed a late lunch at an empty Chinese food restaurant – a nice break from Mexican.
Anyway, it was about 3 pm and the late November day was winding down but on a whim I fired up the GPS and scanned for any points of interest in the area. Up comes the Arizona Railroad Museum, 16 miles away in Chandler, Arizona.
Whoa, my Fodor’s guide didn’t mention this. So I took off and got there at 3:30. I was informed I had 30 minutes to tour the museum yard of train engines, Pullman passenger cars and assorted equipment.
So dropped my $5 and off I went. I speed toured and photographed this small but very nice railroad museum. The interior passenger cars were particularly well preserved. Kids would love walking through the two lines of train cars was well as climbing up on the steam engine and gazing up at the collection of freight cars that seem to be right out of a Lionel train set.
