All Things Pumpkin Spice
Ahh, its that time of year again. The return of Pumpkin Spice lattes, beer, cookies and even potato chips. Some people can’t get enough to this fall flavor while others turn up their nose in disgust.
What exactly is Pumpkin Spice anyway and does it really have any pumpkin flavor in it? While a pumpkin pie has actual pumpkin squash in it, pumpkin spice is really just a mix of spices:
Pumpkin pie spice is an American spice mix commonly used as an ingredient in pumpkin pie, similar to the British and Commonwealth mixed spice. It is generally a blend of powdered cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, and sometimes allspice. You can buy it premixed in the spice aisle.
You can make your own Pumpkin Spice with this recipe:
Pumpkin Spice Recipe #1
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
Now how different is Pumpkin Spice from a Gingerbread spice mix? Not too different. That nutmeg, clove and cinnamon combo seems to be common in traditional fall and winter spice mixes.
Recipe Two adds allspice to the mix:
Pumpkin Spice Recipe #2
3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
2 teaspoons ground ginger
2 teaspoons ground nutmeg
1 ½ teaspoons ground allspice
1 ½ teaspoons ground cloves.
So have fun this fall and Halloween season. Indulge in Pumpkin Spice recipes and products if you are into this flavor. Don’t worry about getting sick of it because it will soon be gone and then you’ll have the entire year to recover until the Pumpkin Spice season returns next fall.
