Last night we enjoyed a fine bottle of Chardonnay from Orfina Vineyards. This bottle of white wine had traveled 2,500 miles carefully packed in our luggage.
The amazing thing wasn’t that the bottle survived the trip, but that we had drunk it sooner. We’re not big wine aficionados, I can’t say that I can always taste the “hint of evergreen mist” or the “taste of bear scratch oak bark” but can usually the pick up the fresh peach or smoky overtones of a bottle of red or white wine.
But I suspect like most regular folks without a trained palate, I know what I like and enjoy what I enjoy, especially when sipped with an amazing view either of the rolling hills of a winery or just the forest in my backyard reminiscing about our recent trip to San Diego.
Orfila Vineyards and Winery in Escondido, California is a short drive from anywhere in San Diego. We were staying in Mission Beach and it was probably only a 20 minute drive. We visited the Bernardo Winery and had lunch there, and then traveled on to the Orfila Winery.
Bernardo Winery was cute with little shops and old buildings and plenty of old rusty stuff. We had a glass of wine and a fine lunch. But what Orfila Vinery lacked in the charm of its buildings (more industrial) it made up for it with
Orfilia Winery is on the same road as the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park, so you might want to stop by on the way home after checking out the elephants, giraffes, zebras and other animals at the park.
