If you are heading to New Hampshire, Maine or Vermont for some leaf peeping this fall, be prepared to see a ton of dead squirrel along the road and even running around on the highway.
Last year favorable conditions lead to a bumper crop of acorns which created a massive food supply for squirrels and other rodents.
Bountiful food lead to bountiful winter survival and let’s say a earnest effort in the offspring department.
Less time spent looking for nuts to gather and more time in the fornication department, which lead to a large up tick in the squirrel population.
This year the food supply was lower which has forced tons of squirrels to seek new areas. Part of natures plan to get the squirrels to migrate to new areas.
The problem comes when the highways stand between the squirrel and their journey to a new promised land.
We noticed the dead squirrel count to be particularly high around the Concord and Bow area where Rt 89 and Rt 95 meet. Road crews are working overtime cleaning up the carcasses.
We also knew the situation was bad when we left our cornhole game and then next morning one of the “bean” bags (really more like dried corn bags) was missing!
