This photograph of a corn field with silos, barns and farmhouse in the distance under threatening skies pulls together many of the elements I look for when out photographing.
The black and white monochromatic filtering ads to the drama of the scene. The composition has the storm taking up most of the image, highlighting the fragile relationship of the structures. A comment on the farmers relationship to the weather. Fortunes of a season can be lost with one bad storm.
Lighting during a fast moving thunderstorm is exciting and requires readiness and patience. To get a shot like this with the dramatic lighting on the barn requires waiting for just the right moment between getting all wet or electrocuted and getting the shot when the light breaking from the clouds just starts to light up the main subject.
Creating a portfolio of such moments takes years of effort and dedication. Putting yourself out their to find and capture these moments when the weather and subject all come together to form the artist’s vision.
