I want to talk about the square format and it’s benefits. I offer many of my fine art photographs and artwork cropped to a square format and even if the image is presented in a different format, you can order it as a square.
The square is also available when you order a product such as a throw pillow. So basically, any image in my portfolio is available as a square in one way or another.
The benefits of the square format are:
- The Square Format is considered a very modern and contemporary format.
- Square frames are easily found.
- Square abstract artwork can be hung and rotated easily.
- Square artwork is easy to hang in a grouping.
- The Square Format is familiar from social media such as Instagram.
- Fine art photography is often presented in the square format dating back to medium format cameras.
The Square Format – A Symbol of Modernity for the Past 100 Years
Modernists looked to the square as a pure form. The ultimate anti-bourgeois motif to combat the most ornamented designs around the turn of the century.
The square format was considered avant-guarde – compact, solid and flawless. A modern form. Art books and magazines in the square format stood out as modern objects. Later think album covers and CD covers. Perfect square canvases for experiment, eye catching art and design. To this day the square is a popular choice for cutting edge book design for subjects like design or architecture.
Of course, the grid format is one of the most popular themes in modern art and the grid is the basis of most websites. The square image fits neatly in online publications. It is scalable from thumbnail to the main feature. You can neatly design pages around the square. Most graphics be it horizontal or vertical get cropped to a square at some point to fit into a web designer’s grid. Besides, it’s the mainstay format of the popular sharing app Instagram. Today’s viewer sees square images scrolling by their small screens on a daily basis.
Just like on a website, the square on a wall becomes easier to arrange and display.
