This time of year during fall foliage season, Jenne Farm is popular among photographers as a great example of a Vermont family farm in an idyllic setting.

Countless postcards and calendars feature the farm. Early in the morning at sunrise you can often stand tripod leg to tripod leg with other photo enthusiasts each trying to get their own version of the scene.

I’ve been there many, many times all through out the year but never ran into anyone else. I guess I don’t get up early enough. But on my last there were four cars and a bus load of tourists getting dropped off.
They made their way down the road, cell phones in hand, kind of like Zombies right out of Walking Dead central casting.
The tourists walking along the road seemed a bit puzzled. Like they were wondering what they were suppose to be looking at – was this an amusement park? Is this real life? Where are the signs telling me where to stand? Where is the narrator? Where is the guy holding up the red umbrella? When do we stop walking? When do we reach the end? Where are the bathrooms? Where is the gift shop? When is this bus tour going to stop for dinner?
How did this farm in a remote part of Vermont become bus tour worthy tourist spot?
The story goes that a local photography workshop started to bring students to Jenne Farm as part of their course. The photos started getting out in the form of post cards and prints. And then other photographers started to flock to farm. And then it was featured in the movie Forrest Gump which increased it’s fame.
Let’s face it. A lot of weekend warrior photographers need to be told where to stand. They are happy to stand tripod to tripod among twenty other photographers to get the exact same shot.
But in all of my years visiting Jenne Farm, I’ve never seen a bus load of tourists being dropped off. That’s a whole new level of fame!
